Columbia County Courthouse ...
The Columbia County Courthouse located in St. Helens, Oregon was
built in 1906 with the clock and bell added in 1910. Stone for the courthouse was quarried locally (in the early 1900s St. Helens' basalt rock quarry was a major industry for the area).
The courthouse annex was constructed in 1968.

Early History ...
"The first Columbia County court met in 1854 in Milton, which was county seat until it moved to St. Helens in 1857. The devastating blaze of 1904 spared the original woodencourthouse, but the danger was apparent. In 1906, the city leaders laid the cornerstone for a courthouse built from local basalt. The bell and the Seth Thomas clock in the tower were added in 1910. A modern courthouse annex was constructed in 1972."

U.S. National Register of Historic Places ...
In 1984 the "St. Helens Downtown Historic District" was added to the National Register of Historic Places (District, #84000137). The District rougly covers Strand, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Cowlitz, and St. Helens Streets, and Columbia Boulevard.
"The Columbia County courthouse is a two story structure which sits on an above grade basement. It is "I" shaped in plan and has a symmetrical three-bay front and five-bay sides. The roof is a flat hip with boxed eaves. ... The bell and clock tower which is centered on the top of the roof has a square base of metal ... Each gable end has a clock face in it. The four faced clock was made by Seth Thomas of Connecticut in 1910 and installed in the County Courthouse on February 10, 1911. The bell is suspended from the ceiling below the clock faces. The river and plaza facades of the building were identical, as were the north and south side facades of the building originally. In 1972 a new, incompatible, addition was built onto the north facade."
