Force Lake ...
Force Lake is a small lake located within Portland's Columbia Slough watershed, at approximately Columbia River Mile (RM) 106. Force Lake lies within Portland's Historic Kenton District. The Vanport Wetlands lies to the east, Smith and Bybee Lakes lie to the west, and the Heron Lakes Golf Course lies to the south, and Portland's Exposition Center lies to the north. Force Lake was once a recreational spot in historic Vanport City.

Early Force Lake ...
In the mid 1800s the area of today's Force Lake, Vanport Wetlands, and Smith and Bybee Lakes was a mixture of lakes, sloughs, and marshes.

Prior to the 1920s the largest lake in the area was called "Force Lake". The lake was named after George W. Force, an early settler.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management General Land Office (GLO) Records database (2007) shows title being granted to George W. Force and Susan Force for 633.25 acres of T1N R1E Sections 3, 4, 9, and 10, and T2N R1E Sections 33 and 34, on March 8, 1866, under the 1850 Oregon-Donation Act.

The 1854 cadastral survey map (tax survey) for T2N R1E shows the "Force" home located in T1N R1E just south of the corner of Sections 33 and 34, today the location of the Delta Park interchange off of Interstate 5.

In 1920 Force Lake was drained to create more farm land. Farming continued on the land until the mid 1960s.

During the days of Vanport Force Lake was landscaped as a recreational lake for residents. Developers made every effort to preserve as much woodland as possible. A footbridge connected residents with Force Lake Park, which had an “artificial” sand beach, tables, benches and other park equipment.

Today's maps show Force Lake to be a small lake on the northeast side of the Heron Lakes Golf Cource. It is a wetland habitat for a variety of migratory waterfowl.
